Performance Tip

With the release of recent movies such as "The Secret" and “What The Bleep Do We Know?” more and more people are aware of their ability to visualise what they want in life, set goals and achieve them. A large percentage of clients I see in my clinic are wanting to make change in their life and set new goals, and need some support to do that. Most of the requests for workshops and seminars I receive from organisations involve wanting some form of goal setting.


In my experience, one of the VITAL steps which seems to be missing from some goal setting processes is the simple step of ‘action’! So many people say to me, I know what I want. I’ve created my dream board. I repeat my goals and visualise them every day. But I’m still in the same home/relationship/job/body!

The reality is that, once we set a goal, we do need to take some form of action. It doesn’t seem to work if we sit around and do nothing, expecting to have the goal fall in our lap.


Did you know there is a very high percentage of people who watch the lottery results hoping they will win...when they haven’t actually purchased a ticket! Wanting something and doing nothing about it, is a bit like being a ticketless ‘lottery watcher’.


When you set a goal, take immediate action. It doesn’t have to be a huge step, like resigning from a job or ending a relationship. It can be a small one. Like calling a friend or colleague, going for a five minute walk or reading the travel section of Saturday’s newspaper. Just take the first step! When you do this, you set up a momentum. You propel yourself towards your goal. And you show, tell and program your RAS (Reticular Activating System), which filters necessary information into your mind, to pay attention to something different. Maybe you’ll even find yourself drawing into your current reality the very thing you’ve set a goal around.


So take the first step. Step up the stairs. Make the call. Go for a walk. Read the paper. Action yourself into whole new reality. Ask yourself, “What’s one thing I can do today, right now, to achieve that goal?” Then, in the words of the NIKE slogan…“Just do it!”
