“Sometimes even to live is an act of courage.”

Performance Tip
When was the last time you encouraged someone? When was the last time you encouraged yourself? Does your talk and self talk encourage…or does it promote fear?
The word ‘encourage’ means ‘into courage’. When you en-courage someone, you help them step into that place of courage where they can be brave and strong, and continue to not only survive but also thrive in their life. Sometimes in the past, some people may have become so busy, stressed or distracted that they may have forgotten the power of encouraging someone.
Have you ever watched a child learning to walk? Their parents are usually standing by, smiling, clapping them, and telling them how clever they are. In other words they encourage them. Imagine a world where we received this much encouragement with every new thing we attempted. It would certainly make us much more inclined to do new things and step out of our comfort zone without the fear or ‘failing’, wouldn’t it?
Now it may not be appropriate to be as obviously encouraging of your colleagues as you may be of a child who is learning to walk; however it is worth a quick check in. When was the last time you…
- Called a meeting just to show and tell everyone how great they are doing?
- Told a colleague, manager, family member or friend how much you appreciate them?
- Spent time with someone helping and reassuring them?
- Showed your encouragement and appreciation of someone via a present or a special treat?
- Communicated something positive without having to tack a ‘BUT’ at the end of the sentence eg “You did a great job but…”?
- Did someone’s job for them just to make things easier eg washed the dishes, bought them lunch or a coffee?
- Gave a pat on the back for a job well done?
If you did one of these today, yesterday or even a week ago, fantastic! If you didn’t perhaps it’s time now. Look around your home or workplace or wherever you are reading this right now. Choose ONE person and think of ONE thing you can do or say RIGHT NOW to ‘en courage’ them. Then do it! (If you are alone, maybe you could look in the mirror and encourage yourself!)
Feels, looks and sounds good doesn’t it? Congratulations…you have just helped someone improve their performance. Their life performance.
Have a happy week!
