Making a Difference

Inspirational Tip

An old man was walking along the beach, when he came upon a part of the sand where thousands of starfish had washed ashore. A little further down the beach he saw a young woman, who was picking up the starfish one at a time and tossing them back into the ocean. "Oh you silly girl," he exclaimed. "You can't save all of these starfish! There's too many. You can't possibly make a difference " The woman simply smiled, tossed another starfish into the ocean, and said, "I made a difference to that one."

Performance Tip

Sometimes in the past we may have got so bogged down in work, in life, in managing all the things we do everyday, that it was easy to forget the impact we do have on others. It can be easy to think we don't really make a difference

For some people it's very important to get feedback so they know they're making a difference. For others it's less important and some people don't seem to need it at all. Yet the level of feedback we receive, isn't necessarily reflective of the difference we make in the lives of those around us.

Sometimes if you are thinking or feeling that you aren't making a difference, this can affect performance. So it's vital to catch this before it does affect you and the people you work and live with. Sometimes it can as simple as realising you haven't had a holiday for a year and need a break. To check in on what a difference you are making, ask yourself:

When was the last time you...

- took a holiday?

- asked your boss/manager/partner for positive feedback?

- gave someone else positive feedback?

- checked inside on how you are travelling?

- let someone else know what a difference they make in your life?

- made a new contact?

- stepped outside your comfort zone?

- went for a long lunch with someone you work with?

- learned something new and exciting?

- sought out an expert, coach or professional mentor?

One of these questions might be the very trigger to help you stay on track for

maximum performance.

Want Your Own Cheersquad in Life?

True champions know when to seek advice from an expert. Unless you are an elite athlete, there may not be people around you who coach you in life, or cheer you on. (If you do have this, consider yourself very blessed!) So, particularly in the workplace, you may need to be your own inner cheersquad, and it's also okay to ask for help and feedback if you need it. You might even consider asking someone you admire within your organisation to act in a mentoring capacity for you, or you might enlist the help of a life coach or professional mentor.

Life Performance Mentoring can celebrate your achievements with you, support you to let go of self sabotage, cheer you on, and help you set new goals with clear steps on how to achieve them. Click here to find out how.

Have a happy week!
