Inspirational Tip

“The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change their future by merely changing their attitude."

Oprah Winfrey (1954 – ) American TV host, media mogul and philanthropist

Performance Tip

In the early 1980’s in the United States, an overweight, black, uneducated female went for a job as a TV anchorperson. She was competing against slim, white, college educated males. She got the job!

She went on to become the highest rated talk show host in the history of television. She is worth billions. She has influence and power. And she changes lives all around the world.

‘She’ is of course Oprah Winfrey.

She got ahead because she didn’t make excuses. She focussed on all the things she could do, rather than those she couldn’t. She decided what she wanted and went for it, stepping over all the obstacles in her way. She became a leader in her industry, taking the concept of the 'talk show' to a whole new level.

Mostly, she is a ‘real’ leader because she’s upfront about her own issues and challenges. She talks openly about her struggle with her weight, food addictions and even how she is portrayed at times in the media. She doesn’t pretend to be perfect. She seems to have mastered a wonderful blend of being relatable and very human, whilst still being inspirational.

We can all learn from her leadership. It’s good to remember that, no matter how much money someone has, how successful they are, what position they hold or what they have achieved, underneath it all they are still just someone having a human experience.

Sometimes we inspire people more by being real and honest, than by pretending to be superhuman or perfect. As a parent, sometimes it’s more effective to be (appropriately) honest with our children, than pretend nothing is wrong. As a manager, sometimes it’s more effective to let your team know you’re going through a hard time which may affect your performance, rather than let your experiences inadvertently affect them. As a coach, sometimes it’s more effective to show how you have fears which you move through, instead of putting on a fearless front.

After all we are all human aren’t we? We all eat and shower and go to the toilet, and we all have fears, and vulnerabilities and days where things look, sound or feel not so good. So let go of the pressure of needing to be perfect all the time!  Let go of the illusion of being superhuman. Just be real. You might even discover you establish even more rapport with your team, and inspire them more than you

ever thought possible.

Have a happy week!
