In September of 1942, a young doctor and his family were arrested in Vienna and taken to a concentration camp in Bohemia. His father died there of starvation. His mother and brother were killed at Auschwitz in 1944. His wife died at Bergen-Belsen in 1945. Only he and his sister would survive the war.
When he was moved to Auschwitz, a manuscript for a book he was writing was discovered by prison guards, and destroyed. His desire to complete his work, and his hopes that he would be someday be reunited with his wife and family, gave him hope in what seemed like a hopeless situation. He also observed in the camps that the prisoners who had hopes of being reunited with loved ones, projects to complete, or who had great faith, tended to have better chances of survival than those who had lost all hope. Those who perceived they had nothing to live for, died the fastest.
In April of 1945, his camp was liberated, and he returned to Vienna, only to discover the deaths of his loved ones. He finally reconstructed his book and published it, earning him a teaching appointment at the University of Vienna Medical School. In only nine days, he dictated another book inspired by his experience in the prison camps, which would become the bestselling "Man’s Search for Meaning". Before he died, it sold over nine million copies, five million in the U.S. alone. That young doctor’s name was the Austrian psychiatrist and psychotherapist Viktor Frankl. In his work he often referred to a famous quote by the German philosopher Goethe: “Those who have a 'why' to live, can bear with almost any 'how'."
Your unconscious mind is programmed to always want more. As soon as you achieve something you have wanted to be, do or have, it wants something else. And it wants to know WHY you want it! This is why goals are so important. They literally give us meaning in life, inspire us to keep going when things are tough, and they motivate us to take the little steps that lead to the big goal.
What is one of your goals? What's one thing you can do today to help you 'get' your goal? Even having one clear goal can support you to live your life with passion, achieve happiness and maintain peak performance.
